Help Keep Our Roads Safe – Volunteers Needed for Our Traffic Management Programme
The Parish Council is proud of the work being undertaken to improve road safety throughout our village, and we are looking for volunteers to help us continue making a positive difference.
Our Traffic Management Programme uses three important tools: a Speed Indicator Device (SID), two Smiley SIDs and an Automatic Speed Watch Camera (ASWC). Together, they help encourage safer driving, raise awareness of vehicle speeds, and provide valuable information that supports local road safety initiatives.
The SID and the Smiley SIDs provides drivers with an immediate reminder of their speed, encouraging them to slow down when necessary. Experience from communities across the country shows that these highly visible signs can be an effective way of influencing driver behaviour and promoting safer roads.
The Smiley SIDs also collect accurate 24 hour traffic and speed data, enabling the Parish Council to better understand local traffic patterns and identify areas where additional safety measures may be required. This evidence is invaluable when working with highways authorities and other road safety partners.
The ASWC takes photographs of speeding vehicles and reads the number plates. Offenders are reported to Thames Valley Police and receive warning letters. Repeat offenders may receive a visit from the police. The data collected supplements that from the Smiley SIDs .
None of this would be possible without our dedicated volunteers. By giving just a small amount of time each month, volunteers play a vital role in helping to operate equipment, gather data, and support a programme that benefits everyone in our community. Their contribution helps make our roads safer for pedestrians, cyclists, children travelling to school, and all road users.
Volunteering is flexible, rewarding, and a great way to meet fellow residents who care about our village. Full training and support are provided, and no previous experience is necessary.
Typical tasks include manning the ASWC (which must always have two operators), manning the SID, helping to move the Smiley SIDs, changing batteries and downloading and reviewing data.
