Amber Cold Weather Alert 8-12 January 2024

An AMBER Cold-Health Alert - has been updated for the South East and is in effect between 08/01/2024 at 12:00 and 12/01/2024 at 12:00.

Advice on how to reduce the risk either for yourself or somebody you know can be obtained from the winter health pages at NHS Choices (www.nhs.uk (opens in new window)) or from your local chemist. If you are worried about your health or that of somebody you know, ring NHS 111.

Winter conditions can be bad for health, especially for people aged 65 or older, and people with long-term conditions such as heart or kidney disease, COPD (including emphysema and chronic bronchitis), asthma or diabetes.

Being cold can raise the risk of increased blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes.

The cold and damp weather, ice, snow and high winds can all aggravate any existing health problems and make people more vulnerable to respiratory winter illnesses.
