Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day - 6 June 2024

On 6 June we will be commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day with the lighting of a beacon on the Fairground.

D-Day - when Allied forces mounted the largest amphibious invasion the world has ever witnessed. In 1944 Operation Overlord saw over 5,000 ships and landing craft set down more than 130,000 troops on five Normandy beaches in an action that would bring about the liberation of north-west Europe from Nazi occupation.

The bravery and sacrifice of those people in securing the peace and freedom we enjoy today will be observed by the lighting of beacons around the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories – we hope you will join us on the Fairground to be part of this national and international commemoration.

The 6th is also national fish and chip day – this year it is being linked to the D-Day commemoration – and we have arranged with the Horse & Groom for fish and chips to be available to all those wanting to partake.  The price will be £13.50 with £1.50 from every sale going to the British Red Cross.  Booking is essential – please contact Lucky & Lisa on 0118 304 5030.

The timings will be:

  • From mid-day to 9.00 pm for fish and chips at the Horse & Groom. The cost is £13.50 with £1.50 being donated to the Red Cross. Please book directly with the pub.
  • 9:15 pm for the beacon lighting, in conjunction with all the other beacons in the UK.

We hope you will be able to join us to mark this historical event.
